Abolish the Word “Retard” from the English Language

Dictionary.com defines the word “Retard” as to make slow, delay the development or progress (an action, process, etc.) hinder or impede. 2) to be delayed.  From my own view and conversations, this word is mostly used to describe individuals with a disability.  Not only is this offensive, but disrespectful to those individuals.

The question you might ask is what can we do?  I have tried a few times to start a petition on whitehouse.gov to abolish this word from the english language.  I was not able to gain the sufficient amount of signatures that is required for it to be reviewed by congress.  If I were to start-up another petition, would you sign it and share it so it reaches the maximum amount of people?

In the past 5 years, I have heard this word used multiple times and felt angry inside because I knew how hateful it is.  What I didn’t do is say something to those individuals and educate them that its inappropriate to use.  If we don’t standup and say something, it will only get worse.  Some people might think that its only a word and they don’t mean it in a negative way.  The fact is, it’s a major issue in our society that needs to be addressed and corrected.
